Mountain Laurel is one of the most showy native shrubs of the northeast. It is a broadleaf evergreen shrub in the blueberry family that is found naturally along woodland edges and open woods. It is a slow growing rounded shrub that tolerates full sun to full shade but grows best in partial shade. It does not tolerate clay or wet soils and thrives in acidic well drained soils. The flowers and foliage are very attractive and the flowers will bloom for several weeks in late spring. Pruning after blooming will promote a bushy growth. The roots like to stay cool so a layer of mulch will help to keep the root zone cool. All parts of this plant are toxic if ingested.
