Nannyberry, is a versatile native shrub that grows best in a full sun to partially shaded environment . It prefers moist soil though it can tolerate a range of conditions. Nannyberry often grows in habitats with consistent soil moisture but can withstand occasional dryness once established. Its dense growth habit and tolerance for varied environments make it an excellent choice for hedgerows, wildlife plantings, and ecological restoration.
Nannyberry blooms in mid- to late spring, typically from May to early June. Its showy clusters of small, creamy white flowers attract a variety of pollinators and add a striking ornamental display to the landscape. By late summer to early fall, the plant produces blue-black, berry-like fruit that ripen in clusters. These fruits persist into winter if not eaten and provide an important source of food for birds and mammals during the colder months, when other resources are scarce. The fruit’s sweet, edible pulp also made it a traditional food source for Indigenous peoples and early settlers.
Nannyberry serves a vital role in supporting native biodiversity. Its flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, while its fruits sustain songbirds, grouse, and small mammals. The dense branching structure offers excellent nesting habitat and cover for wildlife. Nannyberry is also a Host plant for a variety of different moth and butterfly species, such as the Spring Azure, Hummingbird Clearwing and the Green Marvel.
