Flowering dogwood, is one of the most iconic understory trees of the eastern United States. It thrives in partial to full sun and prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils rich in organic matter. While it naturally grows in the dappled light of deciduous forests, it can also flourish in open settings if given sufficient soil moisture and protection from extreme heat or drought.
Flowering dogwood blooms typically from April to May. Its large, showy white or pink “flowers” are actually four petal-like bracts surrounding small clusters of true yellow-green blossoms in the center. These flowers attract numerous pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and beetles. By late summer to early fall, the blossoms develop into clusters of red drupes that ripen in September and October. The fruits persist into early winter unless eaten and provide a vital food source for over 30 species of birds and small mammals during migration and colder months.
Ecologically, Flowering Dogwood is a cornerstone species. It is a host plant for the Spring Azure Butterfly and the Cecropia Moth. Its spring blooms provide an early nectar and pollen source for pollinators emerging from dormancy, while its autumn fruits sustain wildlife preparing for winter. The tree’s branches and leaves offer nesting sites and shelter for birds. Additionally, as its leaves decompose, they enrich the soil with organic matter, supporting a healthy understory community.
