Black Huckleberry is a versatile shrub in the blueberry family that can grow in full sun to partial shade.  It prefers acidic sandy well drained soil but can tolerate slightly more moisture when planted in gardens. Its smaller size, typically reaching 2-3 feet in height, makes it an excellent choice as a low shrub border in garden landscapes. Black Huckleberry is also valuable as a pollinator plant, attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects with its small, bell-shaped, white to pinkish flowers that bloom in early spring. These flowers provide nectar, encouraging pollinators to visit throughout the growing season. Additionally, the plant produces dark purple to black berries in late summer, which are highly attractive to birds, small mammals, and other wildlife. It is also the Host plant for the Red-spotted purple butterfly.
