Bearberry is a native low-growing evergreen shrub that makes an attractive ground cover. White to pink lantern shaped flowers in mid to late spring are followed by small berries which ripen in the fall. A slow grower, the leaves turn a bronze color in the winter. Branches root where they touch the soil creating a mat forming ground cover. Bearberry thrives in infertile, sandy, acidic soils. It does not transplant well so planting it in its forever space is advisable. The berries provide food to the birds and mammals in the winter as they are slow to rot.
