Pussy Willow grows in average, medium to wet, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade but prefers full sun. Intolerant of dry soils, constant moisture is needed. Prune as needed in late winter to early spring. Plants may be cut to the ground every 3-5 years to maintain a smaller shrub shape. The plant is dioecious, and both male and female catkins appear on separate shrubs. The early March catkins provide one of the first-of-the-season nectar and pollen sources for pollinators. Host Plant for Viceroys.
