Bottle Gentian is a late summer to fall bloomer that has deep blue flowers that resemble flower buds. It thrives in part shade in fertile and moist well drained soils. It is a great addition to a garden in dappled sunlight or along a pond's edge. Although it is slow growing, it is a long lived perennial. It is a popular perennial for a more formal garden due to it's growth habit and striking appearance. Bumble bees are the main pollinator, prying open the flowers to gain access to their nectar rich blooms. Bottle Gentian is one of the native plants favored by the endangered Rusty Patched Bumblebee.
