Unicorn root, is a perennial that typically grows 1 to 3 feet tall. It features narrow, grass-like leaves with a tall, slender flowering stalk rising above them. Unicorn Root grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers acidic, sandy, or gravelly soils, making it highly tolerant of poor soil conditions. Although it tolerates occasional moisture, it performs best in consistently dry to moderately moist conditions and is well adapted to nutrient-stressed environments.
The plant blooms from late spring through midsummer, typically between May and July. Its flowering stalk bears a spike of small, white, urn-shaped blossoms that give it a delicate, frosted appearance. The flowers are mildly fragrant and attract a range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and moths. After pollination, Unicorn Root produces small, dry capsules by late summer, which release fine, dust-like seeds that are dispersed by the wind. These seeds are tiny and lightweight, allowing the plant to colonize open, disturbed, or sparsely vegetated areas.
