Chokecherry, is a hardy deciduous shrub that grows best in full sun, but can tolerate partial shade though this tends to lower its flower and berry production. It prefers moist soil, but can handle occasionally dry soil .
Chokecherry blooms in mid- to late spring, typically from April to June, producing clusters of small, fragrant white flowers. These blossoms are rich in nectar and pollen, attracting a wide array of pollinators such as native bees, butterflies, beetles, and flies. Following pollination, the flowers develop into dark red to purplish-black drupes that ripen by late summer, usually between August and September. The fruits are tart when raw but become sweeter as they mature and are widely consumed by birds and mammals, which play an important role in dispersing the seeds.
Chokecherry serves as a keystone species supporting both pollinators and wildlife. It is a host for many butterfly and moth larvae, including the eastern tiger swallowtail and the cecropia moth. Its spring flowers provide one of the earliest and most abundant nectar sources for emerging insects, while its fruits feed dozens of bird species—including cedar waxwings, robins, and grouse—as well as mammals like bears and foxes. Beyond its wildlife value, chokecherry’s dense growth provides shelter and nesting habitat for small animals and birds.
