Common Elderberry is somewhat sprawling, suckering shrub that typically occurs on streambanks, moist woodlands, thickets, and roadsides. Tiny lemon-scented white flowers appear in large flat-topped clusters in June. Flowers give way to clusters of black elderberry fruits in late summer. Fruits of species plants are sometimes used to make jams, jellies, pie filings and elderberry wine. Fruits are attractive to wildlife. The flowers provide only pollen as a floral reward to insect visitors and the plant is an outstanding value to fruit-eating birds. Elderberry flowers are self-fertile and only one plant is needed for bountiful fruiting.
